James Hayton

Position: Principal Human Factors Consultant

UK Team

James is a Chartered Engineer and a principal consultant at the Keil Centre. He started his career in Military Aviation and after 18 years in the British Armed Services moved into consulting. He has worked for the last 9 years in the aviation sector, delivering Human Factors, Error Management, Risk Management, and Investigative Techniques training and consultative support, but his primary area of interest has been Safety Cultures. 


He has a wealth of hands-on experience applying Human Factors and Safety Culture in his own management roles in the military and in a consultative capacity. His consultancy focuses not only on the assessment of safety performance, but on the development of behavioural strategies for implementing organisational change. 


James holds an MSc in Human Factors and Safety Management, a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. In addition, he regularly contributes to the European Union Aviation Safety Authority’s (EASA) Human Factors Collaborative Advisory Group, and has trained and advised the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in Safety Culture.
