Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a comprehensive psychotherapy approach which contains various elements of many effective treatments. It addresses triggers of dysfunctional emotions and beliefs, such as past experiences or current situations, and the positive experience needed to enhance future behaviours and mental health. EMDR is particularly effective as a treatment for trauma.
During treatment, various methods are used to address the entire clinical picture. One of these elements is a “dual stimulation” using bilateral eye movements, tones or taps. Here, the client revisits past memories, present triggers or anticipated future experiences, while simultaneously focussing on a set of external stimulus. During that time, clients generally experience the emergence of insight, changes in memories or new associations. The Psychologist will guide the individual through each stage and assist them in focussing on appropriate material before initiation of each subsequent set.
